Randomly Displayed Adverts and Callouts

Another useful tool for conversions is being able to attract the attention of your visitors and guide them to the parts of your site you really want them to see. We’ve come up with yet another great little PrestaShop module to do precisely that!

In this module you design a set of “creatives” or adverts that you want to display in either side column of your site and link these to categories, product pages or static pages in order to capture your customers and guide their shopping experience.

You can point them at your best value product, or promote your great delivery service; anything you can think of that you may want to highlight on your site is fair game! You can even link to another site, to promote someone else (but you don’t really want to do that now, do you).

This module is slightly more complex than our previous ones, so make sure you read the readme.html file contained in the archive. Please also consider a donation to ecartservice.net so we can keep justifying the time we spend bringing you nice little goodies to enhance your PrestaShop!! Note that you must upload the admin (appropriately renamed for your installation), classes, img and modules directories into the root folder for your site.

Latest update includes fix to allow deleting adverts (bug introduced in PrestaShop 1.1) and new hook placeholders for the page header and footer (in addition to the left and right side boxes).

Initial Release (September 2008) : Advert PrestaShop Module v1.0

Update for left column bug (November 2008) : Advert PrestaShop Module v1.1

Update to Admin Tab (January 2009) : Advert PrestaShop Module v1.2

Update to Add Hooks (January 2009) : Advert PrestaShop Module v1.3

Presta 1.4.4. Images are not showing in Home page and Adverts Tab after uploading image from computer, above the Upload box, though the file size shows and file can be deleted with delete button. I have given the website’s home page as Link and text ”Look!”. The folder media on the server also does not show the uploaded image. On Live Edit, I can see the module appear blank in the left column. What should I correct?

Sadly this module is way out of date. I’ll try and update it soon, but sadly have to prioritise my “paid” work over these 🙁

Hi, I have just installed the module and all appeared to be fine… I have activated the module in the back office but when I click on the “Adverts” tab I get Tab file cannot be found. All the files appear to be in the right place on the server. Can you suggest a fix?… I am using PS 1.4.4
    Best wishes : Dom

    Hi,

Module works fine. Below some manual updates which I made to work correctly with Russian language because
my provider default collate is “latin1_swedish_ci”.
Therefore tables “advert” and “advert_lang” were created with same collate. I changed tables and field “description” collation to UTF8_general_ci”.

Probably need to fix it in the file /modules/adverts/adverts.php by replacing code at rows 39-53 with following one:

$sql_1=’CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `’._DB_PREFIX_.’advert`
    (`id_advert` int(10) unsigned NOT NULL auto_increment,
    `name` text,
    `date_add` datetime NOT NULL,
    `date_upd` datetime NOT NULL,
    PRIMARY KEY (`id_advert`)
    ) ENGINE=MyISAM DEFAULT CHARSET=utf8′;
    $result1 = Db::getInstance()->Execute($sql_1);

$sql_2=’CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `’._DB_PREFIX_.’advert_lang`
    (`id_advert` int(10) unsigned NOT NULL,
    `id_lang` int(10) unsigned NOT NULL,
    `description` text,
    PRIMARY KEY (`id_advert`,`id_lang`)
    ) ENGINE=MyISAM DEFAULT CHARSET=utf8′;

I didn’t tested it because I made all changes manually. But it should be work with any provider.

    Regards,
    Kamal.

Just wondering how I can change so that I can post .gif and .swf files also.

A very cool module.. but i’d like to use some animated gif for my ads …. that’s not possible because you convert png and gif files to jpg…..

    any solution ?
    Thanks

The module uses the standard PrestaShop object model for the image upload, which is why they get converted. I will probably revisit this at a later date to allow for other image formats as this does seem to be a sensible and popular request.

    both,
    1.2.0.8 dont work?????
    1.2.0.1 seems work

    1. admin avatar

That’s possible. I think the reason 1.2.1.0 was released so soon after 1.2.0.8 (a.k.a. 1.2 final!) was down to some fairly nasty bugs. I’m going through testing on 1.2.1.0 at the moment so will check it out when I get to this one.

  9. admin avatar

Are you using 1.2.0.8 or 1.2.1.0?

    hello, great module, works fine.

But i can’t put it on my home page, i suppose it it doesn’t work with homepage content hook

    1. admin avatar

No, it currently doesn’t – it was originally intended for callouts in the side columns, but there’s no reason I can think of that would prevent adding the ‘homepage’ and ‘top’ (visible header) hooks – could result in some interesting layouts. I’ll put that on the list for the next version which will be released soon.

Hi, I tried my best to try to figure out but i failed… I am a newbie to all this files thingy. i have add news tabs in my back office, but i didn’t mange to upload all those files because i don’t know where is my ‘root’ folder… Can anyone tell me where is my ‘Root” of my site? pls… =(

    1. admin avatar

Hi there, don’t worry — we all have to start somewhere!

The files for this need to go in the main Prestashop folder on your server, i.e. the one that contains the /classes, /modules, /themes, /config folders etc.

This is because it consists not just of a module, but also new classes, and an admin tab.

Let me know how you get on!

Hi, I have the same, ” Tab does not exist” problem with Prestashop 1.1 and Adverts 1.3. Is this relate to permissions or something else?

  19. Jess avatar
    Jess

I uploaded all the files and followed the instructions but when i click on the advert tab it says “Tab does not exist” have uploaded all the files and double checked them to no avail.

    help please

  20. admin avatar

I can only think that the permissions haven’t been set correctly – perhaps in the admin/tabs directory, although it could also be the file in the /classes directory.

The media directory just contains some example media. I suspect that the img/a directory is missing as this is where the images are uploaded to (there’s an empty placeholder.txt file in theie that should cause you ftp client to create the directory). You may also need to set the permissions on this directory to allow the script to write to it.

  31. Michael avatar
    Michael

Where does the media directory go? I don’t seem to have one on my default site. The consequence is “the file cannot be loaded” when uploading a picture.

  36. admin avatar

It wasn’t hard to fix, so the new version is available now, which should fix the issue and allow adverts to be deleted again.

  37. admin avatar

There have been a few changes to the admin architecture since this module was written, and as a result the delete button in the back office is now missing, so you only get an option to view or edit. The view option doesn’t work however….

This needs a bit of an overhaul for version 1.1, but in the meantime, I find that I can delete the image by clicking edit and then clicking the X delete at the bottom of the image at the right-hand side. You could then upload your replacement. This is fine if you want to maintain the same or greater number of adverts, but no use should you want to reduce the number displayed (unless you duplicate the ones you want to display more frequently).

I’ll schedule a review of this, now that 1.1 is at final release; and upload an updated version shortly!

Hi! I installed the module but have a few problem:
    a) How can I delete an advertisement?
    b) It seems, as if I could not overwrite / delete the pictures properly. A new picture is not accepted and the old on reapears if I uploaded a new one.

Can you please help on this?

  39. admin avatar

Update added 01/11/2008 which will hopefully fix it.

  40. admin avatar

I’ve just tried it myself – I must confess, that since the code is the same for both I hadn’t up until now! I’m testing on the latest development release of PrestaShop, but it has a problem too…. I’ll need to have a proper look into why this is happening!

thanks for the module.I’m unable to change from the original right column to left column.each time when i change to the left column, the front shop unable to display correctly.

  42. Ngans.com avatar

Thanks for the module. I am new to Prestashop and your mod looks more promising than the default one : )

  43. admin avatar

The link would be the actual http link to the page you want the image to point to. The image is uploaded using the box below, just as you would add an image for a product (for example).

The idea is that you configure up a whole set of links (internal, or pointing to another site somewhere) and assign these to images that will be displayed randomly on your pages.

I hope this makes sense, if not then please get back, and I’m sure we’ll sort it out for you!

HI, I downloaded the Advert PrestaShop Module v1.0 and install it on my PrestaShop v1.0 final. The installation is fine. But I haven’t seen anything shown with the advert on the home page neither on left column nor right column.

I think I might have done something wrong. In the backoffice, when I setup the advert tab, I pasted the path of the image file of the ads in link box (like “C:wampwwwprestashopmodulesadvertsadvertising.jpg”). Actually, what is the link box supposed to be filled?

Can you give me a hint? if you require more details, please contact us on [email protected]

    Thanks
